A problem I’ve always had with a lot of churches, was that it seems that the people that attend church, view church as a place to go on Sundays…unless you’re a really good Christian, then you go Sunday night and Wednesday too(that’s a joke). But it seems like church is supposed to be more than that. I feel like the church is not the building at all, the building is not where the Spirit of God resides, but instead in His people…us. So we should be living the church, every day, every moment…better yet, we ARE the church. Since August of 2008, I’ve been a part of an incredible body of believers, that make up The Vine. It’s a body made up of different people, with different stories, different backgrounds, different personalities, but all have at least one thing in common…a desire to share God’s love and to connect the world to God, through Jesus Christ…and here are a few ways we have done just that, in The Vine’s 2nd year of existence.

So I just finished this book by Mark Driscoll, The Radical Reformission. It was a great read…entertaining, eye-opening, convicting, and very challenging! I’ve decided to share some excerpts of the book that really stuck out to me. On some of the excerpts I’ll add my own thoughts, but some of them are good enough on their own.

- "That night, I learned that reformission requires that Christians and their churches move forward on their knees, continually confessing their addictions to morality and the appearance of godliness, which does not penetrate the heart and transform lives. In the end, I learned that God’s mission is not to create a team of moral and decent people but rather to create a movement of holy loving missionaries who are comfortable and truthful around lost sinners and who, in this way, look more like Jesus than most of his pastors do."

- "When Jesus relocated his ministry to Galilee, he chose to travel through Samaria, rather than avoiding that region." –Samaritans and Jews did not get along at all! Both groups despised the other. Picture the conflict between black people and white people at the height of the civil rights movement in the US in the 60’s, yeah, it was probably worse than that. The Samaritans believed in the first 5 books of the old testament, but also added their own pagan and occultic beliefs and practices. Yet, Jesus, even though he was Jewish, decided not to avoid the Samaritans. Who are the "samaritans" in our lives? Do we avoid them on purpose? If so, why?

- "One of the underlying keys to reformission is knowing that neither the freedom of Christ nor our freedom in Christ is intended to permit us to dance as close to sin as possible without crossing the line. But both are intended to permit us to dance as close to sinners as possible by crossing the lines that unnecessarily separate the people God has found from those he is still seeking."

- "…the Gospel must be contextualized in a way that is accessible to the culture and faithful to the scriptures."

- "While it is true that we are saved not by our good works but by the good works of Jesus (Eph. 2:8-9), it is also true that we are saved to good works (Eph 2:10). The gospel is not simply about getting my sins forgiven and then sitting around until I get to heaven or until Jesus returns. The gospel compels us to participate with God in the culture we live in. Any gospel that does not compel us into mission overlooks both the duties and delights of being a Christian."

Ok, so those are just a few parts of this book that challenged me, or affirmed some things for me, or just some things that I thought were pretty cool. I’ll do more later, just didn’t want this to be too long.

I love this video from World Relief, and this rendition of Silent Night is good, too. But I’ve really been challenged this year to do Christmas differently than in the past. Something I’ve been thinking about is the reason we celebrate Christmas, to celebrate the birth of Jesus. So if it’s a celebration of Jesus’ birthday, why do we give so many gifts to everyone but Jesus? I mean, I don’t receive a gift on my brother’s birthday, ya know? Then I was challenged with this thought, how do I give a gift to Jesus? Aha! I give a gift to the “least of these!” There are many one can go about doing this, theVine’s Coats for Christmas, check out World Relief’s Catalog of Hope, buying gifts for people you know whom don’t have the finances to do so, giving a gift to a homeless person, there are so many ways! So how is this giving a gift to Jesus? “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” So there you go. I urge and challenge anyone who reads this, for this Christmas, go against the norm, step outside of the “Christmas box,” and “love your neighbor as yourself.”

You know what’s really cool to think…just as Christ loves us enough to die for us, he loves each and every one of the people in this video just the same!

What blows me away is that Brendan could have asked for pretty much anything, and somehow, people would have made it happen. His last two weeks could have been spent riding Space Mountain and getting pictures taken with Mickey Mouse, or maybe getting to meet Derek Jeter or Peyton Manning or whoever! But that’s not what happened, I guess you could say “he got off his donkey.” Like I said earlier, Brendan Foster got it right. “…I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” -Matt 25:40

So here’s a quick review of just a few of the exciting things that have happened in the past 2 1/2 weeks….I moved in with Gregg and his family (the worship pastor at The Vine), which has been really good; I got my first letter from Godfrey, my Compassion child from Kenya; a homeless guy named Larry came to know Christ as his Savior and Lord of his life last Wednesday in the streets (that was awesome! It felt like God was spitting the words right out of my mouth!); and today I’m turning 24! So today is my birthday and I’m celebrating like it’s any other Monday, going to the Garden to have Bible study with the women and children. I could easily take the night off, and let Jason have it tonight, and some people have asked me why I don’t do that…but I feel like I can’t do that. It’s kinda hard to explain, but I’ll try….a few Mondays ago, one of the boys that lives at the Garden had his 9th birthday. So I was talking to him when I got there about what all he did on his b-day, he said he just went to school…and that’s it. I don’t know why my 9th birthday sticks out so well in my mind, but it does, and I have some pretty cool memories from it. But the only thing this kid could say about his 9th b-day was that some guy(I’m sure he doesn’t remember my name) threw a football with him in the parking lot of the "homeless" shelter where he lived, and for some reason, that messed me up. I don’t know why that makes me feel compelled to go on my birthday, maybe it’s guilt, I don’t know, or maybe I love those ladies and kids, actually I know I do…or maybe I’m just getting off my donkey and doing something. And you know I just thought of something, Jesus’ ministry lasted about 3 1/2 years, but we never read of him "taking the day off" because it was his birthday…hhmmmm. Actually, we read can read on numerous occations where he was busy doing something, or going somewhere, or maybe he was just tired and wanted some time alone with his disciples, but he never let the fact that he was busy get in the way of loving others. Check out Matthew 14:13-14…Jesus had just heard the news of John being beheaded, and the disciples had told him about all they had done, now Jesus just wanted to get away with them and maybe "debrief," but the people figured out where they were going and followed. Even though Jesus was tired, had been doing a LOT of ministry, he still had "compassion on them and healed their sick." He always took the time to care for those that needed him, so as "little Christs" we must do the same, take the time to care for those that need Jesus…even if it is your birthday.
